Default 2004 Tachometer problem

The other day I noticed my tachometer was going off the scale while driving on the highway. When I stopped it dropped down a little but appeared to be stuck. Now it bounces around when it does work it shows about 2K RPM's more than what it really is. Does anyone know if it is the actual gage or something else? Can I just replace the gage or is it attached to all the other interments?

Thanks!

My 2004 Tahoe w/ 103000 miles now has a tachometer that runs between 4000 & 5000rpm. Any knowledge would be appreciated
