2005 Suburban Engine Too Worn Out to Keep?
Hi guys,
I have a question about our 2005 Suburban we call "Bessie". It used to be his vehicle, but we traded because I like driving it better than my Traverse. So he drives that and I drive the Burb. It just rolled over 250,000 miles. My husband said it has burned a little bit of oil for about a year now. About a quart every 2000 miles or so.
In the past few weeks, it started to smoke when I start it. Big clouds of whitish, bluish smoke that smells like burning oil. He said the oil consumption has gone up quite a bit. He puts in a 1-2 quarts every week or so. I drive a lot for work, so I generally put 600-700 miles a week on it.
We had a mechanic friend of mine look at it and he said it could be a bad PCV valve and/ or bad valve seals. He said he can fix both of these things.
My question, that nobody can really answer is, is the engine too worn out to keep putting money into it? I really want to keep driving her until it dies! My hope is to keep it going for another year or two. I figure that's just another 100,000- 150,000 miles. Is this unrealistic? Should we trade Bessie in for something newer? I hate to do that because it is paid for, it is fun and comfortable to drive, good in the snow/ ice. The body is in good shape, seems like a waste to get rid of it.
My hubby says I drive it way too hard. But I just like its power. I'm all gas! On the highway, I set the cruise at 85 and sit back! I guess I could try to go easier on her, but can't guarantee anything!
)
Any advice is appreciated.
Jess

Burning 1 or 2 quarts of oil every week is too much. If it is only worn valve guides or seals and it has good compression then it is worth repairing. You say that you really like the truck so a rebuilt engine if necessary is a good investment. It is much better than getting into car payments.
