2006 Suburban transfer case question
Hi All -
I’ve got a 06 Z71 Suburban that periodically gets the “service 4 wheel drive” error.
after initially changing the encoder ring in the transfer motor, and that working for a few months, I finally realized a small oil leak past the shifting shaft into the transfer motor assembly was fouling the encoder ring with oil.
Ive cleaned it a couple of times with good results since then (6 months or a year or so apart), while I watched for either a cheap replacement transfer case or some time when I could replace all the seals in mine.
This time, it has actually shifted into 4-low on its own and I think the encoder ring is shot.
Would it be dangerous to the transfer case to just manually shift it into 2-wheel drive and use it for a couple days with NO transfer motor on it while I order in new parts? As tightly as the transfer case shifts manually, it seems reasonable that it will stay in gear, but I was just wondering if anyone has had to do that or has any advice?
thanks a lot,
howard
