Default 2007-08 to 2009 Navigation (w/XM Navtraffic) Upgrade How To/FAQ

I want to get a specific thread started on how to upgrade the navigation/XM from 2007's and 2008's to the new 2009 with the Navtraffic. There's a lot of information spread out on the forum but nothing in one place.

My questions right out of the gate are:

Will the older 2007 XM receiver module, receive XM traffic data? (GM Part # 28043359) If so, no need to spend money on a new XM module.

Does the newer 2009 XM receiver module (GM Part #15945676), receive XM traffic data? If so will this 2009 XM receiver work with the 2007 navigation head-unit (GM Part#15882766) right out the gate, or do you need a newer 2009 navigation head-unit in order for it to work? (GM Part #19169885)

Is there a GM (TIS) software/firmware upgrade for the older 2007 navigation head-unit that will allow the newer 2009 XM receiver to display XM Navtraffic?

I just did a software upgrade by the way on my 2007 head-unit by using the "Software Upgrade Disc Black Tie Navigation System Radio" disc, version:V0B92 (GM Part #25956121)

Is the newer 2009 navigation head-unit (GM Part #19169885) the primary piece to this upgrade puzzle, without an alternative? If there is an alternative, it could save us thousands on doing this upgrade.

Lookin' forward to some good information accumulating here.

I just upgraded my 2009 Burb that did not have a nav unit or traffic. It did have XM though. After I replaced the head unit, I still did not receive traffic but did receive XM. I later found out that I needed to replace the XM Receiver behind the glove box to the version that supports XM Traffic (UBS) I just plugged it in and the radio recognized it and the Traffic button appeared on the Nav unit. I posted the part # in another thread.

Yeah, I believe that XM part number is: GM Part #15945676, which I did see from your post in the original thread I started. I bought that receiver this past week and installed it, but no Navtraffic.

So if I understand correctly you actually converted a 2007 vehicle to use the 2009 Navigation/XM Navtraffic with success?

When you get a chance will you post all of your specs here please. I think it can help a lot of the confusion by having it in one place.

Year and model of vehicle
Head-unit that you're using with GM part number (also whether or not you have the rear entertainment system, Bose etc.)
XM receiver module and GM part number
GM Navdisc version and part number

No, I added Nav and Traffic to a 2009 Suburban. I would imagine the only difference is Onstar 8.0 vs 2007 Onstar? Also, I did program my vehicle to tell it that it now had Navigation. I think the BCM and VCIM and Navigation options

Yeah, I guess what I'm trying to figure out is can I use my (GM Part#15882766) navigation head-unit with the new XM module to get NavTraffic, or do I have to buy the newer head-unit?

Default traffic

If only it had a life time option... i HATE Bills... I did lifetime XM for $400...

why can't I do lifetime traffic for $100? why do they have to nickel & dime me?!

my iphone w/google maps does traffic... not direct incidents, but it shows me the speed of traffic...

mirage00,

So I'm good to go! Kind of...

In my 2007 Yukon XL, I now have the 2009 navigation head unit (GM Part #: 20807044) and the 2009 XM receiver module (GM Part #15945676). All is good! XM traffic is working, reverse camera, even the Gen 4 GMLockPick is all good.

Only one problem, my chime sounds have gone away. No turn signal, or beeps of any kind. Programming issue? Thoughts?

I also noticed that the clock in the top right-hand corner is gone, and when you turn the unit off there's no clock in the center of the screen anymore. What's up with that?

Thats great news!! Yes the chimes, I beleive is a radio programming issue. As for the clock, the only time the clock doesnt display, that I am aware of is when its first powered up and it doesnt have a gps signal.

So you're saying that your clock is on your nav radio? If yes, maybe I just need to be exposed and locked on to more of the satellites.
