Default 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe - New Engine

I have a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe. A (former) friend put a new engine in. He was working at Auto Zone at the time, and we found out he didn't use the VIN number to order the engine. He ended up putting an engine in for 2007 and older instead of 2007 and newer. Two other mechanics confirmed this after looking at the paperwork. He was having trouble getting it to run correctly, and we finally demanded it back after almost 2-1/2 years. A mechanic who looked at it after we got it back thinks the Tahoe computer is reading for the 2007 and newer engine and not the 2007 and older which is currently in. His thinking is that the computer could be reprogrammed to match the engine that is in. Before I spend the time and MORE money because I would have to get it towed about an hour away, I was wondering if this seems like a feasible plan. TIA!

it's a completely different generation of vehicle. You can't get out of a hole by digging DOWN.
