Tahoe & Suburban The power, space, and brutal towing ability make the Tahoe and its longer sibling, the Suburban, arguably the best full size SUV's on the market today.

And I'm back to playing phone tag with a District Specialist who is impossible to reach, returns my calls when I'm playing in commute traffic (it's illegal here to use your cell phone while driving...BIG fine if you're caught), and has already closed my file once due to "inactivity." A well-deserved thank you to Louis for getting it re-opened.

Today he didn't leave a message. Both the cell and the house phones recorded hang-up calls, but saved the number...GM Customer Service. I called back and got voice mail. I called again and spoke to a live person. She tried to connect me and got voice mail. I asked her to please deliver the same message he's already heard from me...$500 is not acceptable and I'll be interested to hear if he can do better.

Believe me, I'm not giving up. The squeaks and rattles I'm hearing suggest that the mountings are turning to plastic dust. Other than this one issue, though, the truck has been trouble free. How GM treats me will determine whether I buy another Suburban, or pay down the loan until I can spring for a GL550 and make us an all-Mercedes household.

Which will disappoint the hell out of my wife, who is expecting HER car to be the one we replace next.

Refer your dealer to the YouTube video I posted a few days ago...the guy took a random stroll through a GM used car lot and found a cracked dash every 45 seconds. I never noticed mine until I joined this forum and saw this thread. Then I checked the NHTSA website and realized what a widespread problem this really is.

My first car was a Pontiac Firebird. In the four decades since I've owned at least one example of every General Motors make except Saturn, and I'm on my second Suburban. As much as I enjoy this truck, every time I get in it now I have the nagging thought of what can happen if the passenger side airbag has to deploy. It ain't "purely cosmetic." If some reasonable accommodation can't be made to correct a known problem, this will be my last GM vehicle.

My District Specialist has taken to having administrative assistants call my house at times I've made clear I'm at work...which is giving me a feeling about how this is going to play out.

I ended up having a pretty good experience getting this fixed. I attribute this to the dealer, not GM. I had the doorhandles peeling, and then got a crack in the dash exactly like the first picture in the thread. My burb is an 09 LTZ, however, it's long out of warranty.

I complained to GM via email, got a call from a regional GM rep, who wanted me to take it a dealer to look at. I was already annoyed because there was no mention if it would be fixed or not, and I'd be responsible for paying any service/diagnostic fee.

I took it in, they looked at it, and the service manager was great. Offered to fix the dash, handles, and another slight mirror issue for $100 as a deductible (even though I have no warranty). They gave me a loaner car, also.

I was pleasantly surprised. I do firmly believe there is a design flaw or substandard materials issue, but I also recognize they didn't _have_ to do anything from a legal standpoint, even though it was the right thing to do.

Got a call from cust serv rep telling me to take it to the service manager at my dealer. I just got back from there. He asked how many miles were on it and if i was the original owner and looked at the crack. He went to his desk, played with his calculator then told me that GM will only cover 50%. That is not acceptable. I will wait for the cust serv rep to call me back tomorrow. I'm getting so frustrated with GM dealers, service, and vehicles. I've owned 6 new GM trucks/suv's in the last 10 years. This may be the last.

Parks Chevy in Kernersville, NC. I don't say this often (particularly of car dealerships) but I was really impressed with them and willingness to help with this problem.
