Default 2008 lift gate lock assembly stuck in locked position...

I have a 2008 Chevy Suburban 1500 LT, some time ago the automatic lift gate lock assembly began failing. Initially it would not lock, only stay in the open position. After removing the assembly, I noticed one of the gears inside the lock assembly had a hairline fracture in it, causing it to flex and not to function properly. I re-aligned the gears and put it back together in hopes that it would work again. Here lies the problem. It did lock after reassembled, however, now instead of not locking, it is permanently locked, lift gate closed. My question to you is, because there is no access panel aside from removing the whole lift gate panel (which is closed) is there a way to override the mechanism causing it to release so that I can remove the panel and replace the assembly???
