2010 Tahoe 5.3L vortex Woodpecker noise right side
I just wanted to share an experience on here. I have a 2010 Tahoe LT 4x4 with the 5.3L vortex engine with 543,000 kilometres on it. Many spent on the highway moving my daughter and son to hockey as they are both goalies. I took it to the local dealer and I initially thought it was a relay on the right side but soon realized it was coming from the right side of the engine block. The dealer told me I needed a replacement engine. I was give a quote of $7,000 CAD used or $13,000 CAD new, pricing included installation. I drove my truck home and began shopping for a used engine because at this point my Tahoe owed me nothing but it’s been an amazing family vehicle. The power assisted pedal adjustment was a feature my wife enjoyed. I figured I could at least change the engine myself knowing the additional expense once you start removing parts that I may need additional replacement parts like rad hoses and other things. I opted not to change it myself because of our winter weather and heating costs in the shop so I took it to my mechanic where I explained my visit to the dealership. He asked if he could look at it before ordering a used engine. He called me back and explained after checking it out that it was the number 6 lifter and that he recently replaced one in another guys Silverado who had the same engine with only 200,000 kilometres on it. My mechanic believed it had something to do with the active fuel management where in cylinders reduce on open highway. He said he could replace it at a reasonable price so I went ahead to replace the lifter. I got a second call back where he indicated my engine was super clean and he told me my option to use full synthetic oil since the truck was new made a huge difference. He suggested I replace all the right side lifters since it was apart so I agreed.
The Tahoe is running like new again and there is a significant difference in power on acceleration. Best money spent to remove a woodpecker.
