I just bought a 2011 chevy suburban ltz. I just found out to my chagrin, that the 2012 LTZ comes with heated steering wheel. Obviously the sales guy didn't tell me nor did i do my research. I got rid of my range rover that had it and boy it was nice.

My questions is can you and or has anyone attempted to put a 2012 LTZ steering wheel with the heat option into a 2011 or 2010 chevy tahoe, suburban, or silverado? if so, do you know if it requires reprogramming the BMC or is it just a matter of getting the parts and wiring it up?

any help is greatly appreciated.

 

I just finished this mod on my 09 Silverado 1500.

No BCM programming required.

Other than the wheel itself, the other parts I needed were a new clock spring (with the wiring for the heat,) gm part 25966964, and a pigtail from ssconnectors.com, part 60296271.

This clock spring is for 1500's with a 2 stage airbag.

I was going to order the 2012 steering wheel b/c it has leather wraps vs the gmc's wood and leather. I believe my suburban is a 2 stage airbag as well. Thanks for the help!

How much do the parts cost? What's the steering wheel P/N?

 

I used a new '09 Escalade wheel from GM Partsdirect 25853076, $348.29 + shipping. Expensive- yes, but wanted warranty.
This has woodgrain on the wheel rim, doesn't match LTZ woodgrain perfectly, but close.

If I were to do it again, I would use the Sub. wheel w/o woodgrain.

The clock spring I found on ebay for $72 + shipping.

The button is located on the steering wheel next to the cruise control. The controls look exactly like the gmc denali's heated steering wheel but has the full leather warp (nice!).

I just ordered the steering wheel with the heated option from my dealer the part number is (ebony leather): 20998064 ($315), you will need a new SIR coil 25966964 (~$80-$120) and the pig tail connector 60296271 pigtail from ssconnectors.com. When I get the parts i will share pictures of the install, but from what fredrich03 shared in the post above it should be pretty straight forward.

 

quick question on wiring the heating element: do you just wire it into the electrical center near the break pedal? Do you have to change the fuse amp? I read somewhere that they had to up it to 15 amps from 10 amps in position 48 of the main fuse box under the hood?

 

Yes, I found an unused terminal in the block by the brake pedal that is only hot with key. Mine was on the left side almost to the bottom.

These are small male spades, about 1/8" wide. Had to get a used female spade & pigtail that would fit the small male spade in the terminal block from salvage, then solder this to positive side of ssconnector's pigtail.

(Dealer and parts stores gave me the "Deer in headlight" look when I asked about a 1/8 female spade.)

Did my ground wire the same as in the link in my other post.

The SIR coil has an inline fuse for the heated wheel already,7.5a.

I did not change any other fuses at all.
