Default 2hi to 4auto question...

I just bought my 2005 tahoe about a month ago and it has been automatically switching to 4auto from 2hi on it own. is that supposed to happen when enough slippage happens?

Thanks!

I don't think that is supposed to happen. It is either one or the other (4auto OR 2Hi). Just with the information you have provided, my guess would be a wiring issue. Possibly something is loose just behind the push buttons.

I should ask - When exactly do you notice it happening? Just randomly, or is there a "method to its madness"?

it never happens on regular pavement...it seems to only happen when I experienced some kind of slippage. Its been kind of icy and cold here the past few weeks. I never noticed it happening on dry pavement...thats why i was wondering if it was supposed to switch from 2hi to 4auto on its own.

Default Rtfm.

some years are different. the manual is available online, read it, and it should say if it's normal.

That just doesn't seem normal to me...

Maybe someone can offer some insight, but any GM vehicle that I have owned with 2Hi, 4auto, 4Hi, and 4low has never "switched" on its own. That would essentially defeat the purpose of having an "auto" option in the first place - If the vehicle automatically decided to switch on its own. If I had to guess, I would say that it may be the dash switch malfunctioning. GM has issues with the dash switches having soldered joints breaking/coming loose.

I could be wrong, but it just doesn't sound right.

yeah...it didnt seem normal to me either. I did check the manual that came with the vehicle and it didnt mention anything about automatically switching out of 2hi. I have tested out all the 4 wheel drive modes and everything seems to be working ok mechanically. Maybe this weekend I will take the switch out and check it for any visible wiring issues.

Thanks!
