Default 4 Wheel Drive Problems

Having trouble with push button 4 wheel drive, Push 4x4 hi button all it does is flash 5 times . I hear the actuator motor in the transfer case but does not seem to engage .Could it still be the actuator ? Could it be the one in the front axle ? Do not think its the axle one since it is not engaging at the transfer case .Anyone have any ideas where i should start?
Thanks

Year? Model?

On my '06 Tahoe LT, it would do that occasionally and I would also get a "Service 4WD" message on the dash DIC. Ended up being the encoder motor on the transfer case (electric motor that shifts the transfer case from 2HI-4HI-4LO). Depending on the year, another possible culprit is the dashboard selector switch itself.

Chevy wanted $700 to replace my encoder ($400 part, $300 labor).

I bought the encoder motor from Autozone for $175 and installed it myself in less than an hour.
