Default 95-lo5 L80e ,3500

When I bought it a year or so ago I was impressed with the way it pulled like a big block. .. it soon started shifting bad, I changed all of the selinoids tps, temp sensor, brake switch, speed sensor . Still limp mode , the hand written paper in the glove box said" replaced pump" about 800 miles before I bought it. There was fluid in the conector . I took it to a local shop they changed the inside wiring harness checked some things? And 450.$ later said it was fixed... I didn't get home and it went into limp mode.. turned it off .. restart same old stuff.
I liked it when it worked .
That is problem #1, I'm thinking of going to a nv3500 , I like the long tourq band of the tbi and was wanting to get more hrp.
I have a set of 96 vortex heads .
I am kinda old school . The way I see it I have 2 options, rebuild the auto trans and-get tbi up grades chip etc.. ( more computer stuff) or I can go carb ( have a600cfm Holley) and convert to the nv3500. What I need to know is , can I get say 300 hrp with the carb swap W/ hei and a cam without breaking the bank, or would I be better of swapping heads too? what cam would work well ( without mechining the heads etc.) most of my experience with small blocks included carrying a match book to clean and set points... the engine has 11600 mi and runs well ( no blow by uses very little oil)
Any suggestion?
