96 Burb 2500 died while driving
Hello all,
I'm a new member and was hoping to tap into some knowledge.
I have a 1996 Chev Suburban 2500 7.4L 4x4 that is a few hundred miles away from turning 200,000. The truck was owned by a friend for 3yrs until I bought it from him 3yrs ago. There has been no major issues in those 6yrs. I replaced the fuel pump for him approx 1yr before the truck came to me.
Two weeks ago I loaded my family up and dragged a 16' trailer from our home in Washington state to Yellowstone NP. We had no problems on our way there, and the truck performed just fine during the 7days that we spent there. On our way home however, we were driving 70mph westbound on I-90, just west of Butte, MT, when the truck died. No sound that would indicate a catastrophic failure, just dead. The gauges lit up like a Christmas tree, and I was able to coast to the shoulder. Looking under the hood, I couldn't see any obvious sign of issue. No fluids leaking, no smoke, serpentine belt was intact, no burnt/severed/disconnected wires that I could see. The truck turns over, although it does so inconsistently. It seems to struggle, then turns over freely, then struggles again. I can hear the fuel pump when I turn the key and the battery is newish (1yr old). I pulled the plug out of cylinder #1 and see spark.
Before the trip, I changed the oil, oil filter, plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, air filter, etc.
I'd like to get this truck back on the road without blindly throwing money at it.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
