If it isn't one thing, it's another. Check engine light is on, and the scanner is reading P0171 and P0174. I'm told it is a lean condition on both sides of the motor.

The guy at the auto parts store told me to start with the fuel filter, as it may be hindering fuel delivery (and it's only $10)

Any suggestions?

The idle is a little rough, and almost died this morning. And upon light acceleration, it stubbles off the line.

have you changed plugs, cap, rotor as well? air filter too? (a basic tune-up)

fuel filter couldn't hurt for sure.

Air filter is brand new. Plugs look new, but I don't know for sure. I bought the fuel filter and may change it tomorrow.

check for vacuum leaks. 1996 suburbans love them vacuum lines. fuel filter sounds good. go ahead and do a tune up reguardless of the condition of the plugs. cap rotor pcv valve wires plugs. your problem should be one of the items mentioned. good luck. keep us posted.

It's weird, sometimes it runs crappy, and then there are times the CEL goes off and it runs like a champ.

I did find one vacuum line that was toast, and will look for some more when I change the fuel filter.

Learning as I go. Tired of spending money already, but it's the nature of the beast.

Ignition parts WILL NOT cause a lean condition. Fuel filter is super common cause for the codes on that truck. After that you need to check fuel pressure and for vac leaks.

So, I plan on changing the fuel filter tomorrow. Any suggestions before I do it? How do I take the pressure off the system? From the looks of it, it's just 2 flared fittings? I haven't looked at the new filter, but I'm assuming that it is directional?
