97 2dr Tahoe acting up
Thought I would try asking other Tahoe owners before contacting a shop, all help appreciated.
I bought a 97 2 door Tahoe 5.7 about a year ago, I don't remember when I first noticed it but the transmission seems to hop back and forth between 3rd and overdrive. This occurs almost exclusively at highway speeds and never around town. Some trips it wont do it at all, other times it has actually jumped out and in to overdrive every few seconds and will happen off and on during the entire time on at speed. I cant imagine this is healthy for it, when i got exhaust this change in rpm was very noticeable and sounds like its just popping in and out of OD. Weird thing is, if i leave it in 3rd it still acts the same, rpm jumping up and down =(. I'm unsure of what is actually causing this indecisiveness of the tranny,or if it even is the tranny causing this issue. The tranny still shifts strong and is in no way clunky. Is there a possibility the tranny is fine and its a electrical\vacuum issue? my knowledge of transmissions is lacking, thus is why I asking for help. I have a feeling if i ask a transmission shop they will just say it has 123k miles on it and it needs to be rebuilt. Hopefully someone here has experienced a similar prob with a non expensive cure.
I will be checking back to this thread regularly, feel free to ask more questions.

I have a 99 tahoe doing exactly the same thing that you are describing. I have 35" tires and a 6" lift on mine, but the symptoms Ihave with mine are identical to yours. Please post if you find an answer to this issue.

Cbaker and einsnine have a shop do a road test and check the line pressure. Also when they do the road test (usually free) have them put a scanner on it to "see" what the tranny is doing....it sounds like a solinoid apply problem
