Default 98 2500 shock mounts & shocks

So had my 98 2500 with the 454 in getting new tires. Since shocks looked to be leaking, I had those changed out.

so I drive off - and all of a sudden the think is riding like its a gigantic plank - like the shocks are just an iron rod, every bump jars the fillings in my teeth. before it rode smooth and nice -

So yeah i screwed that up.

when i look at the shocks, the top shock mounts just have the bolt going the the upper bushing - but the shock is "free floating" along the length od the bolt, no spacers or anything . Is this Normal?

and what shocks would you guys recomend to get a nice soft smooth ride. If i want to fight it out with every bump, i will run my ford F-250. This burb is for traveling long distances in comfort.
