Default Air Bag Issue

Hey Guys. I have an 07 Tahoe LTZ and recently have a strange air bag issue that I cannot seem to resolve. The vehicle had the factory black leather steering wheel in it, but I wanted a woodgrain wheel installed. I purchased the woodgrain wheel and took it to a local automotive shop to have the steering wheels swapped. They swapped the black leather wheel for the woodgrain wheel, removed the air bag and re-installed it. Since that install, the air bag light is on. I had another automotive shop take a look at the wiring and all, they said there were not pinched wires or any other wiring issues. The original shop does not want to help me out and I do not trust them working on anything on my truck again. Any idea what the problem could be? Seems like it may be something other than just simple wiring issues, maybe something computer related. Please advise.

On the back of the airbag where the wires attach there are plastic clips (usually yellow sometimes white) that push in, if the long skinny finger on one of the clips is broken (they are very delicate) it will trigger the SIR fault light.

Hard part locate, the dealers have them in a kit back in service.

Hi. I checked into this and there is no hardware connection issue. All the plugs and connections and clips look perfect. Any other ideas? Anything computer based I need to check?

Did you pull the two plastic retainer clips out and visually inspect them?
You need to make certain that the long skinny fingers that protrude into the opening of the wire clip don't have the tips broken off, if both tips are broken they may appear OK when in fact they are shorter then they should be.

I am 99.9% sure that this is the problem.

If this isn't the problem try disconnecting the positive (+) battery cable and touching it to the negative post for several seconds then reattach the cable and check if light is still on.

Scott,
Did you ever get this airbag light issue resolved?

What was the problem?

This is why I am very skeptical when it comes to modding anything that has to do with the safety of the vehicle. I hope it gets resolved, but I would be uneasy thinking that my air bag might not deply if I got into a serious accident.

I can tell you that air bags make a huge difference in the severity of injuries.
