Default Battery disconnection and Trans issue.

Hello all,

So here is my story. Bought a 93 Burb 2500. Leaks fluids every where, trans fluid, oil, power steering. So I knew this thing had issues when I bought it, but I figured in the long run I will just get everything fixed. Well after a few months of driving the Overdrive stopped kicking in, and it started to kick into 2nd gear, I was running about 3 grand at 50 and above. Ran that way for a few weeks and then the truck started to over heat (and by over heat I mean about 210) and saw white grayish smoke coming from the pipe. It would only show when first starting up. Bought a new water pump and some stop leak and the smoke went away, but not the overheating. Oh well the over heating only seems to happen if I sit for too long with the AC on.

So the main issue I am having is the motor now. I read on the forums somewhere that if I disconnect the battery, it will reset the trans codes and give me back my Overdrive, I thought, "oh well, I will give it a shot". Disconnected the battery, waited about 5 minutes and then reconnected the battery, started the truck up and then drove away. Wow, was I amazed. The kicking stopped and my OD was back I was sitting on cloud nine, for about a day when the kicking returned, but the OD stayed. So I thought, "well I guess I could try that battery trick again" WRONG! Now the truck runs like garbage. Almost like I am not running on all cylinders or something. I have checked the fuses, all the connections, I am getting fuel into the carburetors. I mean I am stumped on why it is running like that.

I guess my question from here is, Why would disconnecting the battery cause my Trans to work, and what was I resetting when I disconnected the battery? Also, why is my burb acting this way all of a sudden? Can't really put my finger on it so if anyone has a suggestion let me know.

Thanks, Stephen

ok. Well 210 degrees isn't over heating. over heating is more toward 260 degrees... The reason for the warnmer temp is becuase the fan is clutched and the clutch is old plus it works on temp and rpms. when at idle the fan is engaged because of a centrifugal clutch. This clutch releases @ 1000 rpm+ the second part of the clutch is a thermal spring. so when the temp gets HOT (prob 1/4 way to 260) the thermal spring will enegage the fan. When your runnig at 3k rpm it takes more heat to make the thermal spring override the centrifugal cut out.

Disconnecting the battery resets everything. Is the sel light on? I know this is obd1, but still you can get it to tell you what number it has.

It comes on intermittently. doesn't stay on long. only after the battery was disconnected. My dad says the running like crap part could just be a fuel filter but it only started after I disconnected the battery.

Default Update!!!

Now my burb won't start, It looks like there is no fuel coming through the throttle body (carb area). I disconnected the fuel filter (to replace it) and watched when I turn the key to see if any fuel ran through the line and I saw nothing. Replaced the fuel filter and now on a mission to replace the fuel pump. I will let you all know what happens after. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks.

Default Update!!! Again!

So I put in new fuel pump, spark plugs, fuel filter, and spark plug wires. Truck started right up. Yay, ran like a champ and then about 15 minutes of the drive I lost my Over drive again.

I need to know why I keep losing my Over Drive, what the cause is and what I can do to fix it. I do not have to money to send it to a mechanic. If I have too, it will have to wait, but if there is something I can do to fix it then please I am all ears. Thanks for looking.

I changed the TPS (Throttle Positioning Sensor) and the TSS (Transmission Speed Sensor) and it seemed to fix my tranny issue. I have my overdrive back and its not kicking into second anymore. I have only driven 30 or so miles with the new sensors so I will let everyone know an update when I drive 100 miles.
