Default Best/cheapest way to add extra keys 2012 Suburban

I got 2 keys with fobs with the vehicle. Would like to get some more keys to hide in magnetic box, keep at home and in my bass boat. What is the best way to go about this without overpaying the dealer to provide? Would probably just need keys and not fobs. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum.

Not sure if the key can be obtained other than at the dealer since it has a chip.

Also advise against the "hidden key" option. Believe me, the thieves know all of the places they're hidden.

I would rather give a spare to someone I trust and call them if needed. Never hide one on the outside of the truck. If you have to hide one inside and call Onstar to unlock her if you lose your key.

An option is to have a key cut that will only open the door but not work in the ignition, this way you have a way to get into the vehicle if you lock your keys inside, but if someone finds the hidden key they can only get in the vehicle but not start or drive it...

Might also check for the plastic keys that you can keep in a wallet. They used to be readily available but fell out of favor because people tried to use them more then a couple of times... they are meant for 1-2 times use to get you in your vehicle.

You can get the key blanks from ebay. Many come with programing instructions. Just take the blanks to a locksmith to get them cut to match the original.

For example: 2 GM REPLACEMENT TRANSPONDER CHIP IGNITION KEY CIRCLE PLUS UNCUT BLADE | eBay
