Default Blown engine-'99 Sub.

So my mechanic tells me I have a blown engine. Very low compression in #6 cyl. Said it is probably the ring. I have been loosing coolant thru the exhaust and running poorly.
I have been getting conflicting answers on what engines I could swap in. First I was told to get one from the same year GM truck/suv. Then I was told that car engines could be used as well. I would just like to know what I should be looking for?

I'd go with one from that era... I just can't remember when they quit putting 5.7's and started with the 5.3's.

I don't think you could go wrong with a rebuild...

What is the difference between the truck & car blocks? Would the accessories not mount up the same? Would my exhaust manifolds bolt up to the car block?

Unless you want more performance, the absolute easiest way for you to swap the engine is with a rebuilt 5.7 unit from a 96-99 truck/suv.

If you go with anything newer it is the LSx style engines and they are COMPLETELY different in every way. This is still a relatively easy swap (as far as most swaps go), but considerably more difficult than dropping a SBC 5.7 back into your '99.

On the LSx engines, none of your existing accessories will be a direct swap over. You can use them with custom fabricated brackets, however.

Also you will need a new wiring harness and computer.

Your intake and exhaust will also not bolt up.

On the LSx engines, the car and truck blocks are all the same. The differences are in the intake manifolds, accessory mounting, and oil pan.
