California Vanity Plates-can use on new 2 me Sub?
I live in Northern California. I bought a new (in 99) Suburban. I got vanity license plates for it and when we traded it in(2003), the dealer gave us the plates. We have had them all this time sitting in the garage. We did not have them assigned to another vehicle, didn't do any thing with them but let them sit in the garage. Now I have another Suburban that these plates could go on since they are "suburban related". Can I just notify the DMV and pay some fee for putting the plates on, providing no one else has the configuration? I shouldn't have to pay the $41 for new plates when I have the plates already! Of course, I would think of this on Friday evening of a long weekend!
Does anyone know the answer to my inquiring mind?

Yes, you can put the plates on the new-to-you suburban. I just did the same thing with plates I had 6 years ago, and they charged me the fee for personalized plates, and new tags, but they also made me buy the new plates. I even showed them the old ones, but they said that once they go out of circulation, they have to order new ones. So, I have 4 plates now that say the same thing.
Thanks for the info. If they are going to charge me for new plates, I will come up with a new configuration! I wanted personalized plates but I am not going to pay full price for something I already have! Talk about a waste of time, money and METAL! Geez-O!
Generally, the $41.00 is the registration fee. The plates are usually free when you pay the fee, so I would imagine that you will need to pay it, but I could be wrong. California is its own country
