Cold Starts
Hello All, first post here. Looks like a nice forum.
My wifes 2001 Tahoe doesn't like cold starts. It's not even that cold out and she has to sit in it and rev it to ensure that it warms up in the morning.
any idea's on what this might be or has anyone experienced this before. This is the first winter we have had this vehicle. it has 75,000 miles on it.
Thanks for all your help in advance.

RE: Cold Starts
I dont really know, but first depending on the temperature it isnt the best thing to be revving the engine! You dont want to do this on a cold engine. I dont know how long you are talking for it to take to warm up! It might be normal time if you have the engine idiling and the heater cranked, it isnt going to heat fast! The heater is taking the heat from the egine taking it longer to warm up.
I once had an old mustang that had this issue. It turned out that the thermostat was wide open. But the engine wouldnt heat up at all with this issue, it stayed cold no matter how long you drove. You also might check and make sure your fan, fan clutch isnt locked up in the on position. I dont know what fan you have. Good Luck.

RE: Cold Starts
sorry when I say rev. I mean like up to 1 or 1 1/2 RPM. Not really Reving.
I'm know it takes a while to heat up. The problem is that it won't stay running on it's own to heat up. It's like 35 40 degrees. I could see this being a problem in sub zero conditions but not in semi mild for Wisonsin conditions

RE: Cold Starts
If it isnt staying running it could be a lot of things. The first thing I would check is to see if the idle is adjust right. Maybe it needs to be bumped up a little. But it could be a number of things.

RE: Cold Starts
My first guess would be that the Idle Air Speed motor (gizmo that controls idle by allowing air past the main butterfly) is carboned up and needs to be cleaned. Not real familar with the 01s but once you get it off, you can use regular spray carb cleaner on it.

RE: Cold Starts
Check the fuel pressure regulator on the top of the engine fuel rail driver side, the rubber diaphragm can fail, unplug the vacuum hose to it and check for fuel leaking into hose, if so it is bad.
