Default Cracked front bowtie

Well I noticed the other day thata rock must have nailed my front bowtie and cracked it right in the middle. It kinda works out ok though because I was planning on replacing the bowties with either chrome or black painted bowties. If I am planning on painting the bowties should I buy a metal bowtie and paint over that, just so this kind of thing doesn't happen again? For those of you who have painted your plastic bowties, are you having problems with chipping or cracking from rocks? I'm thinking it would be better for the durability of the paint and the bowtie itself if I replaced the plastic bowties with metal and painted over those, or is that not necessary? thanks for any input.
