Default Cracked heads 2005 Tahoe

I brought my 2005 Tahoe z71 to dealer today for losing excessive coolant problem. I suspected an internal leak due to no leaking coolant puddles in driveway and yes indeed the dealership confirmed today my heads are cracked and to replace them both will be $2700 (parts and labor) They said roughly 15hr job @ $89/hr. My question is with 138,000 miles on this engine, would it be smart maybe to throw a rebuilt engine or even a low mileage used engine in for half the price? What would be the going price to pull my old engine out and install an engine? Thanks for any input.

We have an 04 and there was a recall with castech heads...they were replaced under warranty..but im not sure about the mileage...

Seems a little high unless they are using new head assys w/ valves, springs, etc. Might be cheaper to get some used heads and have them reconditioned w/ your valves, etc. Just a thought.

There was a problem with some heads on those engines, if you install a used engine you could end up witth the same problem.
