Default fault codes

hey guys. im new to this site but it looks great. ive recently bought a 99 suburban and its been running really well but noticed the other day that the engine light has come on. im assuming its a sensor issue somewhere?
am i able to access the fault codes but jumping the data link connector? what terminals do i jump? ive heard somewhere that all vehicles after 96 need a scanner to access them.
any help greatly appreciated. thanks alot.
keep up the good work!

go to AutoZone or a similar auto parts store near you - they scan these for free. Much easier

That is correct and you don't want to try jumpering the datalink connector on a newer vehicle as you could short out something very expensive...
You can pick up a code reader at Harbor Freight or Amazon or as ousig2408 suggested your local auto parts store will do it for free...( hoping you will buy your parts from them)

The A-B jumper only worked on pre-'96 OBD I.
