Default Fuel Gauge and Low Fuel Light Erratic - 2001

2001 Suburban 1500 4WD. Owned since new, 265,000 miles. Not one repair other than tires, batteries, wipers. Best vehicle ever made.

Just started having gauge drop to below empty and low fuel light come on, even after just filling the tank. Then it will work fine, then off again.

I've searched other threads, but they all had recently had the fuel pump replaced and then had gauge problems - mine is original. System is completely undisturbed. I very much doubt there is a bad connection or loose wire. One thread talked about gauges "sweeping" on start up - none of my gauges sweep on start up and they all work fine.

I believe it makes sense to replace pump/sending unit due to age/mileage. I understand from looking at pumps on line that there are two different pumps and I need to know my module ID tag number. What is that and where do I find it, before I order a pump.

Thanks much for your help.

The dealer can get you the correct pump part number from your vin. You don't have to buy it from them, but you can get the correct pump number.
