Default Fuel Issue

Howdy all, first time poster.

I have a 2004 Suburban with a couple of issues. The first one is when we lived in California, it was difficult to pump gas. The nozzle would shut off frequently and it took forever to finish. The second is a hard start issue.
At first I thought it was a fuel pressure regulator but I could not find the regulator on the fuel rail. After a little research, I discovered that my Sub is set up for flex fuel but is not labeled as such. What that means is that the fuel pressure regulator is built into the fuel pump. No Fun.

Can anybody point me in the right direction? I feel I will at least need to replace the fuel pump but what will I need to do to fix the gas fill up issue and are these related?

Thanks

sounds like your fuel tank vent solenoid is stuck closed ,typical problem with gm vehicles.its part of the evap system.when its stuck closed it causes the pump nozzle to kick off while your filling your vehicle.for your second part of your question do you have a check engine light on if so it might be a good idea to start with that as engine codes give you some direction to follow.there are many variables as to what your problem is .you could always get a fuel pressure tester and check to see how long it takes your fuel pressure to come up and what it actually is.just a few suggestions.

Thanks Chevy55, no CEL just hard starts. I need to turn the key on without starting it and pump the gas a few times then do that again and it will start. Once it is running, no issues. I'll get a scanner and see what comes up.

you should try and get a fuel pressure tester and see what kind of pressure your getting with the key on engine off, then when you get it running see what the pressure is.another trick is to unhook your coolant temp sensor the one for the computer which sets it to default and it may help with your hard start.i have come across a bad coolant sensor where it was leaning out the fuel mixture and wouldn,t allow the truck to start.i put a scanner on it and the coolant temp was reading 305 degrees and this was at -20 where i live in the north.there also was no codes.

sounds like you potentially have more than 1 issue, the tank and/or evap system isn't venting and going off of symptoms you're fuel pump is leaking down but you'll have to do pressure/volume testing to be sure.
