Your towing capacity is certainly affected by the GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) when loaded, AND the GVCW (Gross Vehicle Combined Weight) rating. A lot also depends on your combination of engine and rear axle gear ratio. We would need to know the exact engine and your transmission and axle codes to help you calculate max weight for a travel trailer.
There is a sticker in the glove box containing a lot of useful information, and it also includes all the vehicle RPO codes. The ones that start with a G tell us about your rear end.

I have max tow I forgot to add that in the post
because the glove box says NHT
and found the window sticker and says Max trailering package
As I take it NHT is and GU6 are the codes

Just having the "max towing" package means you have an extra cooler, the receiver for a hitch, and a brake controller. Doesn't tell us which rear end you have. Apparently there is no 1500/2500/3500 with the 2015 Suburban, and the 5.3L is the only engine option for that year, but there are TWO different rear end (differentials) you might have. That means your towing capacity is EITHER 6000 pounds (max) if you have the 3.08 rear end, or 8000 pounds (max) if you have the 3.42 rear end. The RPO codes in the glove box will tell you which you have.
RPO Code GU6 indicates a 3.42 rear axle gear ratio, and a towing capacity of 8000 pounds. RPO Code GU4 would be the 3.08 rear axle gear ratio. I don't see other options on the Suburban for that year.

@Codo I missed where you gave the RPO code. Yeah with max towing package and GU6 for the rear end, your towing capacity is up at 8000 pounds.
Your friends that are telling you gross vehicle weight and all that is important are right - you don't want to pull 8000 pounds, and then shove 2000 pounds of crap inside the Suburban somehow too!
You need to remember as you shop for travel trailers that the "dry weight" of the travel trailer that is advertised will increase dramatically when you load it with all your gear, AND fill the water tanks. I would plan accordingly. I would expect you can easily hit another 1000 pounds or more of load over the dry weight of the TT once you fill the propane tanks, fill the water tanks, and put some gear in there.
