to the world of bowties... I bought a 2002 chevy LS Suburban 4x4 owners book calls for a pf59 oil filter and 6 qts of oil with a new filter, I look online it shows a pf46 a shorter filter, so I bought it and did the oil change, now do I still use 6 qts? or 5 , or even 5.5 qts. of oil?

thanks
feels like a dumb question to me now, maybe I am having a blonde moment or just a senior moment.

I always go to advanced and buy the 5 quarts of mobil 1 and usually mobil 1 filter for $32. The computer rings up the short filter, if you just back for a truck you get the number for the long filter. Never had a prob with using 5 quarts...

Do a little home work on the filters, as some even though they fit, are designed different internally, some have a check valve to help keep oil backed up in the system so you don't get a dry start...
As for the oil, once you know what you need you can always put that in, but in an issue where you don't know, go one quart less i.e. 4 or 5... allow the oil to drain down in the pan and check the level after about 15 minutes and add accordingly... if you can, always pre-fill the filter before installing it, this will also help prevent dry starts...

Oh one more thing. That actual oil system, only holds 1 Quart of oil. The last 4 (or 5) quarts is simply there to cool off and just have more oil so that there is more friction modifier and cleaner so that you can actually get 7K miles out of synthetic or 3K miles from conventional.

The short filter is the correct one for the 5.3 and 6 quarts is the correct quantity of oil.
