Tahoe & Suburban The power, space, and brutal towing ability make the Tahoe and its longer sibling, the Suburban, arguably the best full size SUV's on the market today.

Default Just bought a 2006 8.1L Sub 2500

Hi guys, just bought a new to me Sub with an 8.1 motor and 42K miles! Just left the Excursion family for the Sub! My 6.0 Excursion was a money pit and was costing way too much to keep her going! I sure hope this Suburban is reliable! Glad to be here in the forum any 8.1 tips or hints let me know!! So far the 40 mile drive back to my house I've been averaging 15.3 mpg's which aint bad for a 496 cubic inch motor!

The motor runs sweet, no cold startup knocking and runs like a sewing machine! Feel like it would outrun my Excursion 6.0 too, so I am a happy camper!

Looks like you found a good one. What are you towing? We had a 98 GMC Suburban whaen the kids were younger, it served its purpuse well. Now we have a Tahoe. Still towing but now a smaller trailer.

Not familiar w/ the 8.1 engine. Did it come in the 06 'burb? Is it a big block?

Is your 'burb a 2500?

15.3 mpg with the 8.1 that is awesome. Any mods there? I got the same truck with 80k miles and I get 11.4 mpg with no load when I baby it. If I drive regular with no load I get about 10 MPG. I am not complaining cause I brought it for towing, and I knew it would be a big drinker, I just wanted to know if you are still averaging 15 MPG.
