Default Keep going through ac belt tensioner & belt

Hi all, I keep through a/c belt tensioners and belts on this 2000 suburban 1500. I've installed the correct acdelco fleet most expensive belt and the ac delco tensioner correct part # for this vehicle. but shortly after it starts clanking again the tensioner over extending and hitting the tranny lines until it finally breaks off or the belt slips until it works its way off and falls towards the engine block. This truck had a collision on the front left side, It seems like the tensioner is not forward enough and the other one wore a groove into the tensioner pulley from it being not forward enough. Anyone had a similar problem? I was thinking to use washers when I remount a new a/c tensioner to bring it more forward. When I got this truck the a/c belt was off. Thanks. And Im not going to go buy a pulley alignment laser or tool its too expensive for me.

I can only run the a/c idiling or going very slow until it starts clanking and hitting the tranny lines but when I install the new tensioner and belt it wont make any noise or clank for a while.

Hmm - this might be the same issue we had on our 2005 Yukon Denali 6.0 liter, which kept breaking the AC belts but cooled normally (with an occasional noise though) otherwise.

This was caused by "compressor slugging" due to the low location of the compressor on our engine. See this link for details and photos; fix was to replace compressor though. 2005 GMC Yukon Denali AC belt breakage issue - Automotive Forums .com Car Chat
