My 2000 suburban with 100k is losing coolant. No visible leaks, no smells. Any idea where it's going?

The 5.7 liter V-8 is known to leak coolant from between the intake manifold and the head. It is sometimes not easy to find. Mine was leaking on the back of the engine and it wasn't easy to find. The reason for this is bad gaskets.
If you can't find it leaking any where else (Hoses, radiator,???), it most likely the problem.

It could be something as simple as a radiator cap, you might also have a leak in the over flow tank.

 

They have coolant sealant with UV dye in it for $4.99 and it works!

I picked up some sealer stuff that the guy at checker recommended, but will that gunk up the radiator it that's not the problem? Anyway, I think the radiator cap sounds the easiet and cheapest to check, so I'll try that first.

 

oh yea - the sealant has to go directly into the radiator, correct? Or will it seal a leak in the overflow if there is one?

By yuk - do your mean that you wouldn't use the stuff and would rather spend the money to get it done "right"?

My 98 5.7 did that too. You keep driving it long enough and you see the leak sooner or later. Mine was intake gasket,which i was told like to give probs around the 100k mark.
Dondobe said it right,the 5.7 has that problem, I just wonder how long the new gasket will last again. I still run the Dexcool type coolant and some times wonder if that is a problem waiting to happen.
