Malfunctioning engine hour meter?
I am looking at buying a 2005 tahoe. . it has 20, 600 miles, and the engine hour meter claims 254 hours.
Well, traditional math states thatwould be ave mph of 81.1, which is rediculous. I've checked this particular detail inmany used tahoes and the norm is 30-40 mph ave. I'm trying to get the guy to take it to a dealer and find out what's wrong with the meter before I purchase. I talked to my hometown chevy service manager and he says he's never seen one go bad, and aside from tampering with it, (which he wasn't even sure was possible) couldn't think an explanation.
I know if the computer was ever tampered with it will void the warranty, which is why I want it checked out first.
Any thoughts?
Thanks for any help.

Landon,
Are you absolutely positive that "you can reset the engine hour" meter on your 07 Tahoe?
You may want to get back in the vehicle and have another crack at it and report the results.
My guess is that this 05 Tahoe may have had the cluster replaced at around 10k miles and the dealer reset the odo to the correct miles but not the engine hours.
If you give me the VIN I can try and confirm this.

If you are questioning my comment then i must not be able to. I am not around my vehicle however i thought I just held the check mark and it cleared the hours out??? I am referencing the time/hour that shows up in the instrument cluster. I guess I am wrong as I have only put 2,000 miles on my tahoe in 6 months. I rarely visit the drivers seat nor do I reset very often. But I was sure I remember clearing out the timer or whatever. Sorry, I guess I was wrong!

The guy thinks it has 4.10 gearing. . anyway to find that out too? (aside from looking in glove box for gear code)?
thanks
Lyndsey
