Default map disc

Do I need a map disc to have a working navigation system in my 2013 Chevy Silverado 1500 LTZ Z71?

Yes.

But be careful where you buy. I thought I'd update my '08 nav disc and bought one off eBay (for half of the $100 GM price). I was feeling proud of myself, right up until the point where the nav system said the disc was no good and kept spitting it out.

I know this is not really a helpful answer, but would you want to update a Nav map disc when most smart phones provide the most current traffic and road updates... ( I guess if you don't have a smartphone that would be why)
I do keep a Garmin Nav in the glove box should I find myself somewhere with no signal though, the map is a few years behind but it'll get me out of the sticks in a pinch
