Someone else may know more, but my first guess would be 1987. 1988 is when they did a redesign into what we call the GMT400 platform, which ran through 1998. 1999-2006 was the GMT800 platform. 2007 introduced more changes.

The issue I see is that the frames changed significantly between the GMT400 and GMT800. And I am sure it changed a good bit between the 1987 and 1988 year models as well.

I've got a 1996 and a 2006 out in the driveway, and the frame of the truck is significantly different, and I think it would greatly impact being able to bolt the wrong generation body to the frame, unless you were good at welding and making mods to the frame, or adapter plates and brackets.
