Default My First GM - '00 Suburban Registry

New to the GM (Chevy) world, been a Ford guy, but can't pass this deal up.

Scoring a clean 2000 Suburban tonight, or tomorrow, and I always like making registry posts so I can look back/document mods and whatnot.

The truck is from down south, so theres very little rust. Around 200k on the body, but new crate motor, transmission and transfer case with paperwork. Runs and drives I would say perfectly. He's sent me videos and pictures of it just about everyday (old friend of mine who moved from Michigan down south). Only issue is the drivers leather seat is ripped up pretty good from wear and tear getting in/out, and the "BRAKE" light is on the dash, but i've done quite a bit of reading and it seems like the sensor in the brake fluid reservoir goes bad. No other lights on.

It has the barn doors, thats about the only thing I don't like, I like the style better, but id take the hatch over them to have a rear wiper.

I have a few plans for it over the next few months, he has some chrome 20" wheels on it, im not a huge fan of chrome, so they will probably get painted/coated black or maybe plasti dip and make them winter wheels. I want to lift it (not sure how much, at least 3" though) some beefier tires on 20" or 22" wheels, I really don't care for the factory mirrors, so ill be swapping the tow style mirrors on (Gonna figure out if I can get the heated/signal mirrors and wire them up, im not sure if it already has signals or heated mirrors). Also gonna modify the dash and install an iPad, relocate the headunit and HVAC controls to the center console. I recently did an iPad Mini in my 2006 Explorer, with a wireless OBDII scanner, it was an awesome setup. I also would eventually like to do the Denali front end swap, with the projector headlights, and better looking bumper/grill. For now, ill be putting on a 2500HD hood, and doing a basic retrofit in the stock style headlights with some Morimoto Mini bi-xenon projectors. Gonna figure out how to get the quad-high beam mod going, as ill want my projectors to stay on, as well as the separate high beam.

Looking forward to this thing, as they seem to last forever. I see them on Craiglist or driving still with 250k+ miles on them still running strong.

Few pics hes sent so far:

So just got home with it not too long ago. This thing is GIGANTIC! Biggest vehicle i've ever owned was my Explorer, which was plenty big enough for me, but this thing makes that look like a compact.

Few quirks I need to work out. Gonna use this as a check list so I don't forget anything.

1. Ignition is worn out, seems like a common issue. Replace it, or cut those 2 tabs off.
2. Needs an alignment.
3. Only has one key, no fobs. Need more keys, and some remotes. Just ordered two new keys and fobs on Amazon.
4. Needs a good deep cleaning (carpet shampoo too).
5. Needs a real antenna, PO put one of those ugly rubber short ones on. Barely get any reception.
6. AC blows hot. No biggie, its Fall/Winter anyways. Will worry about that next season.
7. Needs a passenger side blinker bulb, hyper flashing. Not sure if its front or back.
8. Glovebox door finish has peeled off. Refinish, or replace soon.
9. Front little map lights don't come on when I open the doors, don't know if thats normal, but I will figure out how to get them on. (As well as replace all interior lights with LEDs)
10. Mirrors don't work. Drivers does barely, but I would like to replace them with the larger tow style anyways. Passenger side has a cheap replacement glass that looks awful.

Still been busy with work, and haven't really had much time to do anything with it yet. I popped the hood and got nervous for a second, it looked as if the coolant reservoir was empty, but its just pretty discolored. I might replace it, just for the simple fact that the engine bay is pretty clean, and then theres this nasty looking yellowed plastic bottle shining on the passenger side, lol.

I can't stand these factory mirrors, aside from the fact that they don't adjust anymore, the pass. side has a poorly cut replacement mirror glass glued in place, and its like a funhouse mirror. Pointless. Yesterday I ordered the tow mirrors, and got the ones that are power, heated, have the amber light on the front with a clear lense, red blinker built into the mirror glass, and then two bright white LEDs on the outer side which will be a reverse light. (They can be wired up to anything, but reverse light makes the most sense)

Only thing i'm bummed about, is they still don't have these things with a puddle lamp. I might order some short white LED strips and stick a couple on the bottom of the mirror and drill a small hole to run the wire up into the mirror. Wouldn't be hard, and you wouldn't see the strips unless I either lifted the thing sky high, or you were on your knees. Speaking of cosmetic mods, I also want to get rid of the door trim. I read a few pages saying its just stick-on, so we'll see. They said the truck was repainted two years ago, so hopefully they did it right, taking all the trim off. I also need to get the glue from the old window vent visors off, thats just an eye sore.

I also noticed while playing under the hood, the throttle and cruise control have a whole lot of slack in the cable. Ill have to see if theres any way to adjust/tighten that. It would make throttle response feel even better.

I scored a good deal on Amazon, I got two brand new keys, and key fobs for about $28 shipped/prime. I now have keyless entry, and 3 keys. Only thing is, my only working key is worn out, so I don't want to get replacements cut out of a worn key. I am having issues turning the ignition on unless the key is in just right. I need to figure out how to find the key code and have a brand new key cut from that, instead of tracing the old key.

A dealership should be able to pull the key code and make new keys for you. It won't be as cheap as going to Home Depot to have keys cut, but at least you know it'll be done right.
