Default New Guy intro and driveline problem

Hello All! I just joined because I have a new problem with my 2003 'burban 1500 4x2 (195K miles). I gave up on the FSC forum but that's another story.

I live in Tucson but spend time in Northern Mexico working. I was returning to Tucson from Cananea when I hit a monster speed bump (anybody that knows Mexico knows exactly what I'm talking about) at about 25 mph. There was no additional weight in the back, in fact, the 3rd seat had been removed.

I noticed nothing on the 30 minute drive to Naco at 55-60 mph. When I slowed in Naco (10-15 mph) to pass through the border I noticed a slight ticking that was definitely speed related. Since it was 2 - 3 times higher frequency than the rotation of my rear wheels - I concluded it was driveshaft related.

At higher speeds there was no noise or vibration at all. So I drove on to Tombstone. Again, when I slowed (25-30 this time) I noticed the same noise but, it was now a slight knock (not a tick) and it didn't go away until I hit about 40.

It was about here that I noticed that the noise went away when the brakes were applied. And the noise went away whenever I was accelerating.

So I limped home by alternately accelerating (slowly) up to about 80, then braking down to 55-60, accelerate, brake, etc.

I crawled under the truck last night and didn't see anything obvious, but it was dark and I was tired. I'll jack it up Saturday and I would sincerely appreciate any advice or stuff to look for or try once I get it off the ground.

Thanks in advance, and I hope this forum is more helpful than the last one I was at.

Sounds like you knocked a bearing or race out of place. WHen you apply the brakes it centers the wheel up.
