NP 246 Transfer case rebuild tools
<hr style="color:#CCCCCC; background-color:#CCCCCC" size="1"> Hi folks! I'm replacing the worn out trans in my 2001 Suburban 1500 LT and I figured while I have the transfer case out a rebuild would be in order. The truck has 160K on it so I imagine a few parts maybe worn. I also want to check to see if the pump upgrade was done to it as I am the 3rd owner. My question is are there any special tools needed for the rebuilding process? I know I need snap ring pliers to seperate the case but are there any seals that can only be installed with a special seal installer specific to this unit( Like the ones required for he 4L60E trans)? Thanks in advance

I can speak from rebuilding a number of other NP transfer cases however never had the 246 cracked open. A seal puller is a nice to have but a screw driver will do the job, however after spending $12 bucks for one I question why I never got one before. There was one instance I needed a bearing puller however I always just rent them from the parts store as needed.

I don't know if you've actually identified a problem with the Case, but 99% of the problems with one not engaging into Lo, is poor Fluid maintenance and infrequent/never used.
You may only need to just get it open and give it a good cleaning. That, fresh Fluid and periodic transfers usually get/keep them working good.
