Default Oil consumption question

I know there are a lot of threads about this but just wanted to get some fresh and current info. I have 2007 suburban with 110k miles that's using over a qt per 1k miles. Seems to have gotten worse after getting synthetic oil change. Does gm help owners that are out of warranty.

I've been running Castrol GTX 5W-30. I tried running a Full Synthetic on my trip to California. Wowza did I burn oil. I knew it got worse on the highway, but after a 5000 mile all highway trip, I used up the extra 5 quarts I brought with keeping in at the top of the hash marks.

I've since gone back to Castrol GTX, and in town I don't burn much oil at all. As soon as I do highway driving it starts to burn, just nowhere near as fast as Full-Syn. In 3000 miles I start with 5.5 quarts and then just add the extra .5 quart around 1500. At oil change time around 3k, I'm just at the bottom of the hash marks.

2008 5.3 with 164,000 miles.

You must be driving it pretty hard if the OLMS says to change in 3,000 miles. Most of my driving is city stop & go and I get about 7,000 between changes.

Thanks for reply, gm and dealership both said nothing they will do. I'm just going to switch back to convention oil and see if that helps. Family friend said it's probably the rings. Gonna give it a little more time before deciding what to do.

A compression check is a fairly easy job to do and will at least give you an idea of what cylinders are possible problems... if not rings could be valves... if left unattended the oil will eventually plug the catalyst and you will have another problem/expense on your hands

I'm running this engine into the ground, it's been burning oil since 100k(I bought it used at 140k), if I make it past 200k I'll be happy. I'd rather put money into a Duraburb conversion or a newer DI engine when the times comes.

I change my oil at 3k unless I'm going on a trip. I use a standard AC Delco PF48 filter.
