Default OnStar unavailable due to outdated software - 2004 Suburban

I was headed out for a lengthy roadtrip in my 2004 Suburban and decided to take advantage of OnStar's 3 months free service for pre-owned vehicles. I pressed the button, listened to the intro and tried to connect but could not so I called on the phone. After putting me on hold for several minutes OnStar said that the software in my vehicle was out of date and could not be supported by OnStar.

Has anyone had or resolved this issue? Is it worth trying to get a stealership to upgrade the software/hardware? Is there a way to modify or re-purpose the now useless installed OnStar sytem for use as a bluetooth device?

I believe it's a hardware issue.

basically it's cell phone is too old. It uses the verizon network, which no longer supports 2G (don't quote me on that).

but, that's the jist of it.

There are aftermarket solutions, similar to OnStar, some plug in your OBDII. some replace your rearview mirror.

Pushing buttons: Trying the OnStar aftermarket mirror

or even that one.

Although, to be honest... I'm not sure I see the point.

I appreciate the response SabrToothSqrl. I'll check out the pushing buttons article. The OCD part of me just hates that I have this completely useless cellular system in the vehicle, but I'm sure I can just get over it!

I think you can get new OnStar hardware for about $57,000... I believe it comes attached to 2016 Tahoe (Hehe! I know not helpful)
I too believe SabrToothSqrl is correct, the hardware tech in the 04 is too old.

considering it weighs maybe 0.5 lbs in a 5,000 lb vehicle, if you skip lunch you'll even out on the issue.
