The problem has gotten progressively worse, and I have tried slamming them in, extremely forcibly, making sure they are in properly. Multiple times. No luck.

I tried taking the plastic covers off the bottom but don't see where I could get to any of the components to see if something has come loose or is broken.

When I move the release switch it seems to work properly, and feels like it is working properly.
