Please point me to the 5.3L head gasket DIY thread?
(Nevermind...found out I have to do some more diagnostic work first!)
If you are reading this thread and suspecting you might have a leaky head on your 5.3L vortec, here is a good web link that explains some of the issues.

Bottom line, START by doing a cooling system pressure test, then possibly a UV leak test if you can't find a leak anywhere.
Then, it's time to pull the valve covers and start looking at the heads.
