Possible AC pulley rattle but not sure, how do I check? It’s like a banging clatter
Thank you for adding me as a new member. Here is my question. When I start my 2k suburban she has a banging clatter. But when I turn the AC on the clatter quiets down to almost normal. I still get cold AC so I don’t think the compressor is bad. The belt looks ok but I’ll peobably change it as well. I also did a motor flush to ensure the banging wasn’t the lifters. But one thing is certain is the banging gets quiet when the AC is on. How do I check. It’s a 2000 Chevy suburban 1500 with 208,000 miles. It was basically a gift. She runs and shifts great! Needs some TLC and she would be a road warrior again!
the compressor clutch pulley bearing may be bad...when the clutch is engaged it locked to the compressor and doesn't turn independantly...with the clutch off,the clutch pulley must freewheel. remove the a.c belt and spin the clutch pulley. if it sounds rough or has play replace the whole compressor assembly, a.c belt and a/c tensioner. If this was a fairly new truck you could try to install just the clutch but at this age; replace it all.
