Question Power Side Steps

Does anyone have these on their Burb or Hoe? One of the Burbs that I've found has them as an option. Are they really practical or just a cool gimmick? Seems like they're just another mechanical nightmare waiting to happen or freeze up. How/when do they extend or retract? Are they removable? I would much rather have my chrome "Nerf Bars" from my '96 instead. Thanks a bunch for everyone's comments. I'm getting that much closer to deciding which one to go with. It's nice to have options, but now I have to make up my mind!!! (What mind?)

I took a Tahoe off the lot that had the retractable steps. They extend when you open the door. I have to admit, the truck looks really nice without the running boards visible. But your assessment of them are correct. They are problematic unless you live in an area that gets no sand or road salt. My salesman, who happens to be a friend and former neighbor told me to not to even consider them.

Default steps

I think they are likely to fail... but hey; you have a warrenty?

you could always get them in the down position, then pull power right?

I like how the non power ones seem to keep the sides of the tahoe cleaner... but that's just me...

I was looking at an LTZ with the power boards and they looked nice, but I doubt they would still be functioning after 5 more Chicago winters. According to the salesman and the manual, you can only lock them in the up position if they fail.

I wouldn't get them in a northern climate.

Hey thanks to everyone for their comments. Pretty much as I figured with regard to the reliability. Sorry for the rapid fire questions, but I'm planning on making my decision and purchase this week. Maybe I could use them as a negotiating tool. Anyone else out there that knows if they can be removed? (Easily - unbolt, etc..?)

Everything can be removed but then you'd have to get some "fixed" boards if you want the keep the sides from getting trashed.

Hey Thanks 73Shark,

I will be putting tubular side steps on to replace the power steps. They were the first thing that I added to my '96 Burb after I drove it off of the lot. They look great as well as being functional. I've always gotten lots of positive comments about them. Thanks again for your input.

I've got a set of black Lund step bars off my '07 Tahoe if you're interested.
