Rear door latch help needed

Hey, guys -- new member here. First post.
I have a 96 Tahoe with the side-by-side rear doors. A while back, one of the rods inside the door with the latch came undone. I tried to fix it yesterday, and in the process I made things a bit worse! The bracket that attaches to the rods (2 rods, one for the latch and one for the lock) came off of it's peg. There's a whole in the center of the bracket, which the peg goes through. The bracket swivels around this peg, pulling/pushing on the rods, which opens the door.
The problem: I can't get the bracket to stay back on the peg. I found a washer in the door that looks like it 'could' hold the bracket on, but it pops off when pulling on the handle. There doesn't seem to be room for any other sort of clip.
Does any one know how to fix it? What holds that bracket on?

Welcome.
You will need to replace the door lock lever assembly to make a good repair otherwise you'll be fighting with this problem until you do.

Yeah, that's what I figured. I'll go ahead and get the proper parts.
In the meantime, I put the assembly together, then pounded on the peg a bit. It mushroomed out the head enough to hold everything on... at least temporarily.

Just following up on this, in case anyone has the same problem.
My "fix" above has held up for 4+ months of heavy usage. So far, so good. I used a large punch to pound the peg a bit so the tip flattened out.
