Default Service 4wd

I have a 2005 Chevy Z71 Tahoe with appr. 60000 miles. The service 4wd has been coming on. At times it does not come on or it turns off. I noticed when it does come on the indicator lights next to the 4H, 4L, and All4wd are off. I cannot change to either when it is off. When they are on the buttons and the other drives work fine.

Is there a home solution for this, becuase I don't want to blow cash at the dealership if it something I can do at home. Also, will it be a problem if I take a long road trip with out resolving this problem. Thank to anyone that can help someone with no automotive skills.

You need to have the tranfercase module scanned for codes

Sounds to me like you have a loose wire or fuse somewhere. You can pop the dash trim off and pull the 4wheel drive selector off pretty easy to check. Also, check the ATC fuse in the fusebox under the hood and make certain it is seated properly. I had similar problems which ended up being the fuse. As soon as I replaced it, problems fixed. This, however, was after I had a scan performed and no errors were being reported. If you have an Advanced Auto Parts store nearby, they will run a scan for free.

There are 2 TSB on the problem based on the code either the 4wd switch or some wiring and sensors on the tranfercase need to be replaced. Only way to know is to get the code.
