Suburban Cooling Fan
Hello everyone from a new member here:
I have a 2002 K2500 Suburban with the 8.1L engine.
The last month or so I have noticed that the temp gauge shows the engine running hotter when in traffic or idling. I thought maybe the thermostat was going bad, but it didn't overheat so I was still trying to figure out what it was.
I took the truck for the yearly safety inspection and a wheel alignment to my mechanic. On the receipt they also note any trouble spots they notice as a heads-up. On my receipt it said "cooling fan hitting shroud". I looked under the hood, spun the fan by hand, and it does hit the shroud at the bottom. It still rotates, but drags at the bottom.
The shroud seems very stiff and well anchored, so it doesn't seem like the shroud has moved. The shroud also wouldn't "fall upward" if it was loose. The only thing I can think of is that the motor mounts are worn and the engine has dropped slightly. The sub has about 168K miles on the original mounts.
Any thoughts?
With warmer weather coming, I need to fix this ASAP.
Thanks
Steve

Thanks for the replies.
I am going to check the engine mounts today, both visually and do the engine counter-rotation test.
The counter-rotation test is having someone hold the brakes while in gear and adding a little throttle to see how much the engine moves. This is done in forward and reverse gear to check both mounts.
I will report the results.

I did the engine-under-load test.
There did not seem to be a lot of engine movement, only what seems like a "normal" amount.
I guess I could replace two engine mounts just in case ($80 delivered for both from Rock Auto). It doesn't seem like a big deal to replace them according to the factory service manual. The procedure is remove the wheel and fender liner, jack up engine, replace mount. Repeat for other side.
