Default Suburban hitch receiver

I have an 11 sub ltz without tow package. I'd like to add a receiver, the bumper has a cover where the hitch would go.. How do I add a receiver? Is there a way to cover the receiver when not in use?

Greetings Joel, welcome to the Forum.

There are several choices for aftermarket or OEM receivers.

I suggest that you contact a Dealer, and see how much just the parts cost, IF you want to do it yourself, or the labor included for installation.

Also, you could drop by local vendors which install Hitches, do the same with them, evaluate just parts and labor, then make a decision about what to do. This is my personal recommendation, vendors like that have a wealth of information which will be useful to you.

The third option is, to do a lookup online, and buy a hitch kit for your ride there.

Keep in mind, that beyond the mechanical parts, you will need the Electrical Connections as well.

Q1: Most kits will have instructions as to how to do the installation.
Q2: Some Receivers which you may choose, do not stick out and can be covered/hidden with the Cap.

One other thing...
Your vehicle will not have a RPO code, which relates to the GTW (gross towing weight). Dealers, which have offered a number, usually give 7000 lbs as the max weight. I would highly recommend that you do not exceed this number for what you tow, regardless of the strength of the Hitch you buy.

Good luck !

Default reciever

I'm fairly certain all 07-14 Tahoe's have a receiver.

Remove that cover and I bet you'll find it.

You can't tow as much weight as a Tahoe w/the max tow package, however you can still tow.

Ask your local U-Haul, also check Reese Reese and Curt Mfg. Trailer Hitches, Cargo Carriers, and Bike Racks from CURT Manufacturing

Find out what your rear end gearing is also, if you have a 3.08 any towing is going to have to be light wight at least a 3.42 preferably 3.73...
You can find your gear ratio on the RPO tag in the glove box look for something like this:
GT4 Rear axle, 3.73 ratio
GT5 Rear axle, 4.10 ratio
GU6 Rear axle, 3.42 ratio
GV3 Rear axle, 3.08 ratio

Don't know how the later models handle but from my experience with my '93 suburban the sticker showed it has a 9 or 10k towing rating but in order to get it to pull our 6k trailer we had to add a big secondary transmission cooler, temp gauge for the transmission, sever duty engine fan and a weight distribution hitch. If towing a good amount of weight on any automatic I would recommend a temp guage of some sort if it dosn't already have that in the display. I learned the hard way by eating up a transmission. In the end we got it just how I wanted it, though being a 93 its basically all rebuilt now. haha. But we love going on trips with it because of all the extra space plus trailer on back. If the hitch you have on yours is one of those not mounted to the frame i wouldn't pull too much weight with it. i think my little bumper ball says 2-3k or something but i never trust those.
