Default suburban trans not going into 3rd and above

I have a 1997 suburban sle k-1500 with a 5.7 and 4L60e tranny. the trans has started to act up. it starts off great goes into second correctly but when it goes to 3rd acts like it in netural. topped off fluid (witch is brown) to no avail. read my trouble codes and nothing on trans came up. am going to change fluids but am sort of holding off untill i can get an idea of what is going on. probly will change filter while i am at it and don't want to keep opening up. any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated. and my battery is fully charged.
