Superchips 2815 Review
A buddy at work was selling a Superchips 2815 programmer for $100! How could I pass that up!! So I buy it, but was a bit dissapointed when I looked online and found that it would not give any HP improvements with the 87 octane setting. If you go to the superchips website, and have your VIN in hand, there is a guy there that will tell you what gains you will see. There were 7 or so 5.3L engines used in 07, and it just so happens the one I have doesn't get anything out of the 87 octane tune. I was bummed because I mostly wanted it for fuel economy for my wife's tahoe, but I did see that on the 91 octane perfomce tune, it deliverd a bit over 18hp. So what the heck, I tried it, hoping that I wouldn't be wasting money on gas.I figured out that with the 28 cents difference between 87 and 93 octane gas, we needed her mileage to go from 14.5 to 15.7 just to have the same cost per mile. Granted, it will cost more per fillup due to the higher price of Premium, but there will be more miles traveled between fillups. I installed it, and the power is great! It's pretty mild until you put your foot down, and then the extra 18hp shines through. Then the shift points are much better, but not too firm. We've been through two tanks so far with mixed city/highway, and she is getting 15.7mpg. So the extra HP is covered by the mileage, but not much more. If I drive it, I know I can pull off 16mpg, because she's a bit heavy footed. So, if your thinking about buying one, you might wanna check out the Superchips forum first to see what your gains will be. If I didn't get such a deal on mine, I'd be a bit dissapointed that the 87 tune, and the towing tune weren't usefull at all.
Just another update after a few more tanks. Mileage dropped down to 14.9. Not sure what happened. Maybe her foot got heavier, but she has been running the AC a little, and sometimes has had the windows down. The extra power is nice, but it's not worth the money in gas. I put it down to the 87 octane tune even though it gives no HP increase. We'll see if the other changes help mileage. If not, it's going on ebay or something!
